The USWNT defeated Costa Rica 3-0 to advance to the CONCACAF W Championship final, securing a spot in the 2024 Summer Olympics with one game remaining.

Before halftime, Emily Sonnett scored her first international goal, and Mal Pugh finished with skill. This gave the USA the lead. On a day when the USWNT generated numerous scoring opportunities, the scoring was concluded by a strike by Ashley Sanchez in the last seconds. Sophia Smith had the finest opportunity of the second half but missed, while Alex Morgan missed two decent chances in the first half.

On Monday, July 18, the top-seeded American team will compete against the winner of the semifinal between Canada and Jamaica for a place in Paris 2024. A meeting between the reigning World Cup champions USA and the reigning Olympic champions Canada would be a major international event.

The Americans actually never found a rhythm in the match while playing in temperatures just near 100 degrees Fahrenheit, but they were helped by many Costa Rica giveaways that the USWNT press forced.

Up until Sonnett’s breakthrough on a crazy corner kick sequence in the 34th minute, it did not look good for the USWNT. Lindsey Horan’s deflection of an Andi Sullivan shot off the post allowed Sonnett to be the first to react and score off the rebound in the six-yard box.

The Americans were able to play more loosely in the oppressive heat after scoring the opening goal, scoring in stoppage time of either half. Before halftime, Pugh was skillfully fed in the box by a brilliant Rose Lavelle backheel. After Morgan had done the difficult work of bringing the ball down, Ashley Sanchez pounced with a first-time finish on a pass in the box with seconds left in the game.

Although the outcome was well-deserved, the Americans’ effort wasn’t totally convincing, as manager Vlatko Andonovski noted after the game.

After the game, Andonovski told CBS, “I think we did well and created enough possibilities to score three or more goals.” “However, there were also several issues that I felt I needed to take care of right away. And because I believe we made too many technical errors as a result of our mental preparation, we need to heal both physically and emotionally.”
